8 Tips To Cool Off In A Heat WaveSome of the best parts about the summer involve doing things in the warm weather. Having a BBQ, going to the beach, or going for a run. But when the weather gets a little too hot, these activities aren't nearly as appealing. It's important for your health and your comfort to stay cool during a heat wave. A heat wave can be a dangerous situation, especially for elderly and small children.

Obviously cranking up the air conditioner is one way to stay cool, but there are some other steps you can take around the house that will keep you cooler without stressing your HVAC system or your energy bills. Here are 6 easy ways to cool down your home, and yourself during a heat wave.
  1. Put Ice In Front Of Your Fan - Putting a bowl of ice cubes in front of a fan will cool off the air it's blowing. It's easy and cheap, and you can continue to refill the bowl once the water melts!
  2. Stay Hydrated - Keeping yourself hydrated on a hot day is essential. Drinking water and other hydrating beverages, as opposed to soda and sugary dehydrating drinks, will keep you feeling good.
  3. Keep The Sun Out - One way of keeping your home cool is to prevent it from getting warmer than it has to. Closing blinds and keeping the sunlight at a minimum is an easy way to prevent your home from getting warmer. Sunlight is nice, but when the light is streaming into your home for hours, it easily raises the temperature inside. Keep the sun out and your home cool.
  4. Wear Lighter Clothing - Lighter colors and airy clothing are some easy ways to stay cooler. Dark colors retain and attract heat, and dressing to stay cool can save your body temperature a few degrees!
  5. Hang Out On Lower Floors - Heat rises, and often bedrooms and higher floor levels are noticeably warmer than downstairs. If you have a basement, it's usually several degrees cooler than the top floor. Spending time on the lower levels is another easy way to stay cool when the top floors are too hot. Sometimes even sleeping downstairs can be helpful if you have the means to do it.
  6. Cool Yourself Off - Keep your body temperature down! Jumping into a pool or a cold shower can lower your body temperature and keep you feeling refreshed.
  7. Stay Out Of The Sun - This is an obvious one. When it's very hot out, the sun only makes it feel hotter. Stay in the shade or indoors if you can, and make sure to put on sunblock if you have to be out in the sun for a long period of time.
  8. Cook Outside - Turning on your oven or your stove will lead to an increase of temperature in the house. If you use a BBQ outside you can still enjoy a home cooked meal while not bringing the temperature in the house up!
These are a few simple things you can do to stay cool, that should be free or cost very little. When it is dangerously hot though, be sure that you be safe and contact a family member or a neighbor if you fear for your safety.
