WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FREON AND PURON
Graphic of the World with gasses going around it.You’ve probably heard of Freon.

You may have heard about repairs where you “have a Freon leak” or “need to get the Freon recharged” for refrigerators, in air conditioning systems on cars, and in HVAC systems. Freon, also known as R-22, is the refrigerant gas that was used in manufacturing air conditioners and refrigeration systems for years. However, Freon is highly destructive to the ozone. The United States and countries around the world agreed to phase out Freon in favor of other refrigerants, such as Puron. The US banned the manufacturing of new air conditioners or refrigeration systems that use Freon back in 2010. As of 2020, no new Freon can be manufactured or imported into the US.

Puron, also known as R-410A; Suva; Forane; and EcoFluor, was approved by the EPA as a substitute for Freon. It’s much easier on the ozone than Freon. Additionally, Puron systems operate under higher pressure and use less energy overall than Freon systems, further increasing their environmental friendliness. Less energy usage also means a reduction in your average energy bill. Who doesn’t love saving money?

What Does This Mean for You?

There is bad news and good news.

The bad news is that if you have an air conditioner of any type that was built before 2010, it probably uses R-22. With the total ban on importing or manufacturing R-22 this year, it is no longer possible to repair refrigerant issues in those systems.

The good news is that the newer systems using Puron have higher SEER ratings and deliver efficient cooling using less energy. With higher efficiency, the cost of operating the equipment decreases. That means lower energy bills! So, while replacing your home’s HVAC system is an investment, the increased efficiency with newer systems that feature two-stage heating and cooling means increased comfort year-round and decreased energy costs.

And more good news!

NYSERDA and RG&E offer rebates for replacing legacy systems with more efficient technology, helping to decrease the overall investment in a new system.
